Remi Thornton
Things People Say:
"Absolutely brilliant night shots..." Jon Petitt, Bostonist Editor and Gothamist Publisher
Night photography is a complicated art in itself. It requires the ability to see light in places where there is no light, to compose images without seeing in the darkness all the elements that are located in front of the camera, and to imagine [or just discover after the fact] how the the light that can’t be seen will shape the objects during long exposures. Remi Thornton is a photographer that captures the light in the dark. His work has images that are simple and yet they are very interesting. Using existing light and isolating elements that create compelling compositions while giving a feel to the scenery that is both familiar and unnatural. – exposurecompensation.com
Remi Thornton creates a mysterious atmosphere around the subjects he captures with his camera-- leaving a story that only the viewer can provide. These images are open to interpretation. In my opinion, Remi's work reveals how common objects, scenes, and people can become more than what they appear to be at first glance. They show how light and shadow can be utilized in order to give new meaning to the things we view each day without a second thought. – myartspace.com
Remi Thornton's night photography collection Stills is almost the epitome of proper creepy; otherwise completely normal, harmless and wholesome places that look eerily hostile in the dark. Everything from Ferris Wheels to lifeguard towers to barns and road signs end up looking like scenes from horror movies and you're just waiting for a dark shadow to sneak into frame, stab somebody and scream, "I'm going to gorge on your soul!". Or something like that. Thornton says "What I'm capturing is not complex, and not completely conceptual; it's pure, simple and eerily beautiful." After studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, Thornton has gone on to have exhibitions (both solo and group) and has other collections of images that are equally ominous and quiet. – Lifelounge.com
If John Cage and Freddy Krueger had a baby: While Remi Thornton plays down the fact that his images are highly conceptual, I'm not entirely buying it. His work is extremely simple, but it's complexity lies in its simplicity. It's the minimal content that makes what does appear in his imagery that much more important. Remi has informed me that all lighting is shot as found! Even more incredible. And of course, I'm a sucker for both the eery and the minimal. –TBPdesign.com
Remi Thornton's images remind me of that feeling one get's on the very first night of summer, right as the sun starts to set. an all encompassing feeling of hope and expectation. you know the one i'm talking about. that emotion that has been chased by writers, poets, film makers, artists...forever. remi's photographs seem to capture that evocation of an expected, awaited exhilaration with a wee creepy vibe thrown in there for balance. his images are right on the cusp of a happening it seems, slightly fleeting, right there w/in your grasp if you wait long enough, but look away and you may miss it. – myloveforyou.typepad.com
